Covering the North Pennine border
The border between Cumbria and County Durham runs across some of the highest, emptiest country in England. On the Cumbrian side, Alston Moor sits at the top of the South Tyne valley, while further south the A66 climbs over Stainmore from Brough towards Bowes and Teesdale. Homes here are mostly stone-built: town houses on steep streets, former lead-mining cottages, hill farms with barns and byres, and isolated properties up long tracks.
To be clear about what we offer: our core area is Cumbria, so Alston, Brough, Kirkby Stephen and the Upper Eden are fully covered. We also clear Durham-side addresses close to the border, such as upper Teesdale and Weardale, on request. Send us the postcode and we will tell you honestly whether we can help.

What border clearances involve
Upland stone houses
Older properties in Alston, Nenthead and the Upper Eden villages often have thick walls, narrow winding stairs and low doorways. Photos of the staircase and any large furniture upstairs help us plan. Some streets are steep and cobbled, so tell us about parking and access.
Farms, barns and outbuildings
Hill farm clearances usually include barns, stores and workshops holding decades of tools, timber, scrap metal and old equipment. We sort metal and wood for recycling and pass usable furniture on for reuse. Mention anything hazardous, such as old chemicals or asbestos sheeting, when you ask for a quote.
Weather and travel
The A66 over Stainmore and Hartside on the A686 can be affected by snow, ice, high winds and fog, sometimes at short notice. We check conditions before travelling and will talk to you early if a date needs to move. It is far better to rearrange than to take risks on the tops.
How it works
WhatsApp photos to 07898 719 509 for a free, no-obligation quote. Price depends on volume, access and travel, and anything with resale value can be offset against the cost. Families living elsewhere can arrange for keys to be collected from a solicitor, agent or neighbour. See our full house clearance service or our outbuilding and shed clearance for farm buildings.
Who we help on the tops
Much of our work along the border follows a bereavement or a move into care, often for families who now live far from the dale they grew up in. We keep the process simple: a clear quote, careful sorting, papers and keepsakes set aside, and updates while we work. Holiday cottages and second homes in the upper dales are also cleared for refurbishment or sale.
There are no upfront charges. You pay on completion, once you are happy with the work.
